Professional Biography
Geri Amori, PhD, ARM, DFASHRM, CPHRM brings more than 35 years’ experience in healthcare Risk Management, nine years in mental health care delivery, and more than 40 years as an educator to her educational offerings, consulting, and coaching. She is the principal of Communicating Healthcare through which she continues her work bringing understanding and application of the uniquely human psychological aspects of communication to support individuals and organizations.
Geri served Coverys/Med-IQ for nearly 15 years first as Director of Education, then Vice President for Academic Affairs. In both roles, she led and delivered meaningful education on risk management and patient safety issues. She is best known for her work with the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management, receiving both the Distinguished Service award and the Presidential Citation for lifetime achievement, in addition to being a three-time recipient of the Journal Author Award. She holds the titles of Distinguished Fellow, Faculty Emeritus, and Past President of the Society.
Geri is nationally recognized for her work in furthering knowledge and awareness of communication in healthcare, particularly in the areas of difficult communication, burnout and stress, conflict resolution, breaking bad news, disclosure, and apology. She has taught these skills in 49 of the United States and believes there is much still to be done to support healthcare providers and caregivers in their work to deliver trusted healthcare.
In recent years…
She has expanded her work to include strategies to support patients in their efforts to navigate a complicated and often confusing system. And in that work she speaks to patient groups as well as healthcare groups.
In addition, her new body of work includes guidance on planning for the next phase of life. Using her “Tree of Refocusement” model, Geri works with groups of professionals on planning psychologically and mentally for what has traditionally been called retirement. According to Geri, “It is a new phase of life, not a closing act!”
Geri has a PhD in counselor education from the University of Florida, and a master’s in counseling and human systems from Florida State University. In addition to her work in Risk Management and Communication, she currently volunteers on the Patient and Family Advisory Council, the Patient Safety Committee, and the Clinical Pastoral Education Advisory Committee of the University of Vermont Medical Center. She also is the Board Chair for the Vermont Ethics Network.
